Goatees: The Beginning

Male goatees have been around since the very beginning of mankind. At that time they were worn only by the animal we now call the "goat." Male goats have a nice tuft of hair that protrudes down from their chins, hence the name "Goatee" that we use to refer to a human male wearing such a facial hair style. Although, it wasn't for many many years that the world began to see men with goatees on a regular basis. Goatees gained popularity during the early 1500's as rich, high class males began experimenting with goatees and mustaches. Many different goatee styles were created and worn during this time. It was in this period of goatee exploration that the world was forced to bear the existence of the first gay goatee. Sir Horatio Munii is notorious for being the man who donned the first ever gay goatee.

In his attempt to impress the nobility in a new town he foolishly ignored all normal goatee styles of the era as he tried to make a "splash." He wanted his goatee to stand out, be unique and boost his social status. When he was done he proudly wore his gay goatee and was quickly shunned. So damaging was his goatee that goatee styles were abandoned by most of society. Not wanting to be associated with Munii, men all over began to avoid the goatee preferring to go with goatees and mustaches or just mustaches. For one hundred years the goatee was lost as a style of facial hair. After that the memory of Munii and his gay goatee had faded enough for men to feel safe and comfortable wearing just the goatee.

In the years since there have been many gay goatees but they have been outweighed by the masses of properly worn goatees. The goatee will never have to go into hiding again. Even though the history of the goatee is a rocky one it has cemented itself as a respectable facial hair style when properly worn.
